Estradiol cypionate (often spelled Estradial Cypionate by mistake) is a long-acting form of estradiol, a naturally occurring female sex hormone (estrogen). It belongs to the group of estrogen esters, designed to provide a sustained release of hormone after injection. Medically, it is used primarily for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women who experience reduced estrogen production due to menopause, ovarian failure, or surgical removal of the ovaries. It is also prescribed in certain cases for transgender women as part of feminizing hormone therapy.

Medical Purpose

In medicine, estradiol cypionate helps restore normal estrogen levels in the body.
It supports the regulation of the menstrual cycle, development of secondary female sexual characteristics, and maintenance of bone density and cardiovascular health. Some individuals use it, often improperly, to balance hormone levels following cycles of anabolic steroid use. After heavy steroid use, natural testosterone production decreases, sometimes leading to hormonal imbalances. In rare, medically supervised cases, small amounts of estrogenic compounds may be used to stabilize recovery, but non-medical use of estradiol in sports is considered doping and is prohibited by all major anti-doping agencies.

Estradiol use in men without medical supervision can suppress testosterone further, cause gynecomastia (breast growth), reduce muscle mass, and negatively affect mood and endurance.

Dosage and Administration

Estradiol cypionate is administered by intramuscular injection, typically every one to two weeks, depending on individual medical needs and the prescribing physician’s recommendation.
The dosage varies significantly: in hormone replacement therapy, it is often in the range of 1 to 5 mg every 1–2 weeks. In transgender hormone therapy, the dose may be adjusted according to hormonal response and blood test results.
