Description
Aromasin is the brand name for exemestane, a prescription aromatase inhibitor (AI).
What it does
Aromasin reduces estrogen levels in the body by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which converts androgens (testosterone) into estrogen.
Unlike some other AIs, exemestane is steroidal and irreversible (often called a “suicide inhibitor”).
Main medical use
- Breast cancer (estrogen-receptor positive) in postmenopausal women
It’s commonly prescribed:- After 2–3 years of tamoxifen, or
- As ongoing hormone therapy to prevent cancer recurrence
Other (off-label / non-medical) uses
These are not officially approved, but are common in practice:
- Managing high estrogen in men (e.g. during testosterone therapy)
- Bodybuilding / performance enhancement contexts to:
- Prevent estrogen-related side effects (gynecomastia, water retention)
- Maintain a more favorable testosterone/estrogen ratio
Key characteristics
- Active ingredient: Exemestane
- Type: Steroidal aromatase inhibitor
- Mechanism: Permanently deactivates aromatase
- Half-life: ~24 hours
- Typical medical dose: 25 mg/day (breast cancer)
Dosage – Common discussion ranges (not advice)
- 25–12.5 mg EOD
- Sometimes 5 mg daily only with:
- Very high aromatizing compounds
- Confirmed elevated estradiol
- Not cycled like steroids
- Usually:
- Used only while estrogen is elevated
- Discontinued once labs normalize
❗ Running Aromasin “preventively” without labs often leads to:
- Low libido
- Joint pain
- Depression / flat mood
- Poor cardiovascular markers
4. What NOT to do
- ❌ Start at 25 mg/day unless medically prescribed
- ❌ Use without estradiol blood tests (sensitive E2 assay)
- ❌ Run long-term without bone / lipid monitoring
- ❌ Stack with other estrogen blockers blindly
5. Signs estrogen is too low
- Dry or painful joints
- Anxiety, irritability, low mood
- Low libido / erectile issues
- Fatigue, poor workouts
- “Flat” emotional state
These are often mistaken for “low testosterone” but are low estrogen.
6. Key takeaway
- Aromasin is powerful and irreversible
- Lower doses + labs > high doses “just in case”
- Estrogen is not the enemy — balance matters
Possible side effects
Due to low estrogen:
- Joint and muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Hot flashes
- Mood changes
- Decreased bone density (long-term use)
- Changes in cholesterol levels
In men or athletes:
- Too much suppression → low libido, dry joints, poor mood
Important notes
- Aromasin does not increase testosterone directly — it only lowers estrogen
- It should not be used casually without blood work
- Long-term misuse can harm bones, lipids, and cardiovascular health
